BUILDING A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION IN INDIA

Donor: Mariwala Health Initiative

The grant is focused towards advocacy to ensure a facilitating environment for addressing mental health and suicide prevention in the country.

Over 7 lakh people are reported to have died by suicide every year. This staggering figure only becomes more astonishing when finds that stigma, socio-legal hurdles, and lack of awareness hamper the presentation of an accurate picture. India has seen an uptick towards deaths by suicide, especially post the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the key challenges impacting suicide prevention in India is the consideration of suicide as an individual decision, instead of looking at the social, cultural, economic, and environmental factors.

ETI uses a multi-stakeholders approach working with champion voices, media, policymakers, government bodies, youth, technical experts to highlight the challenge of suicide in India and build effective strategies. The grant is focused towards advocacy to ensure a facilitating environment for addressing mental health and suicide prevention in the country.
